Importance of an Eye Donor Donation
|
![]() |
Corneal transplants are the most successful of all organ transplants because tissue matching is not necessary and rejection is rarely a problem.
The eye itself cannot be transplanted. We've not become that medically sophisticated. However, damaged corneas can be replaced with donated ones. The damaged cornea is removed and replaced during a delicate surgery requiring a microscope. Replacement is done with a local anesthetic and patient's usually experience only minor discomfort. Normal activities may be resumed in one to two weeks.
Medical
Miracles
Medical technology has become incredible. With kidney transplants, we
get patients off dialysis; normal everyday living can be restored to
people receiving vital organ transplants...look at our own (former)
Governor Casey! And we have the amazing ability to restore sight with
corneal transplants.
Perhaps someday it will be you, me, friend, or family in need of a transplant. Think how grateful you and these individuals will be to receive this gift, and it certainly will be the organ donor's family a sense of comfort and gratification.
