Red Eye Express: eta April Allergic Conjunctivitis

I'm so distressed! Last night good old Chuck Rhoades from
Channel 27 announced that, because of the extremely wet winter,
we can expect a bumper crop of flowers and pollen. Any of you
allergy sufferers who live in this lovely area known as "Allergy Alley"
know we don't need any help in the pollen category! So unless we all
can move to Arizona we'd better batten down the hatches for a rough spring.

Symptoms of Red Eye

Allergic Conjunctivitis (Red Eye)
A few articles back we were talking about Pink Eye Conjunctivitis. Three major conditions discussed were infectious, chemical, and allergic. Let's zero in on the one at hand--allergic conjunctivitis or red eye. Very simply the term allergic conjunctivitis means an allergy of the conjunctiva (the thin transparent layer covering the surfaces of the inner eyelid and the front part of the eyeball.) In the spring and fall, when pollen counts are the highest, the conjunctiva can become swollen, red, and itchy.

So how does this evil befall us unlucky allergy sufferers?
We all have tiny mast cells in our eyes, which can be triggered when they come in contact with an allergen. An allergen is any substance to which your body is sensitive such as pollen, ragweed, pet hair, and so on. When allergen meets the mast cell, mast cell explodes releasing irritants (like histamine) that cause redness, itching, and burning.

Put your hands together and thank the most common allergens which give you so many hours of displeasure: Mold, dust mites, pet hair, and pollen from trees, grasses, flowers, and weeds. But wait...there's more...new soaps, perfumes, carpets, dyes used in clothing...I could go on and on.

Symptoms and Solutions of Red Eye
OK, I'll cut to the chase. What defense do we have against these following symptoms: itching, burning, redness, tearing, swelling, blurry vision, scratchiness, light sensitivity, or a foreign body sensation in the eye? That's right...we see our eye doctor (ophthalmologist). Your ophthalmologist has a State-of-the-Art Star Wars like weaponry in the form of allergy drops. These magic drops (through prescription only) block histamine and stabilize the mast cells. That means no allergy explosion occurs in the eyes, and you have a happy patient.

I must take a moment to strongly urge you to NOT TREAT YOURSELF! Over the counter allergy drops are not going to make you better. Besides the fact that if you treat yourself you may be using the wrong thing. Remember, only an ophthalmologist can diagnose and treat you correctly.

Go ahead, Chuck...make your prophesy of doom and gloom! Our ophthalmology office is ready for the battle, and our doors are open for the huddled masses yearning to be allergy-free.
