AST: A LASIK Alternative

Advanced Surface Treatment (ASA) is a more advanced version of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) which was the first type of laser vision correction procedure approved by the FDA in 1995 to reshape the cornea (even before LASIK). Millions of AST procedures have been performed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, helping most patients see more clearly without glasses or contacts.

Patients who are not good candidates for LASIK due to thin corneas or other conditions may be good candidates for AST and end up with clear vision like most LASIK patients.

At Schein Ernst Mishra Eye we have performed thousands of AST procedures since 1996, but we only recommend this procedure if you are not a good candidate for LASIK. We take many conditions into consideration to ensure that your eyes are healthy enough for the procedure: simply needing glasses to see is not the only requirement – we’ll also assess your cornea thickness and shape. Your vision safety is always our #1 priority.

General AST Requirements

  • 18 years or older
  • Stable vision prescription for at least one year
  • Free of eye disease or other interfering vision conditions
  • Proper corneal thickness or other corneal abnormalities
  • Good overall health
  • Realistic expectations
  • Full understanding of the potential risks

It is absolutely crucial that you undergo a comprehensive eye exam to determine if AST is right for your eyes. If any doctor agrees to perform the procedure without an exam, please consult our AST doctors in Harrisburg, PA, to arrange for a free, no-obligation AST Consultation. We will be up-front and honest about your eye health, what to expect from AST and the potential risks. Most importantly, we will let you know if AST is a safe vision correction option for you.
